New Homes for Elephants
In 1997, BOH became a part of an elephant tracking and relocation programme together with the Department of Wildlife & National Parks and the Smithsonian Institute of the United States.
The programme was initiated to help save Malaysia's few remaining elephants which are endangered by the loss of their natural habitat due to human encroachment. The objectives of the programme were to help educate the public on the Malaysian elephant's plight and to raise funds for research into elephant relocation.
The effort has since included financial assistance, sponsoring the purchase of a satellite transmitter collar for elephants, contributing funds towards improvements to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary and educating the public on the pachyderm's plight through links on BOH's own website: www.boh.com.my
